Meeting Minutes
January 12, 2012

Meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm
Babysitting was offered in the Cafeteria
Treasurer’s Report – reported by Brian Pine
Reformatted report
Balance at $6,940.11
Lots of discussion on expenditures. Questions about cost of 6th grade picnic. Will discuss at February meeting. Jennifer Sutton remarked about our contribution to several costly events- International Taste Test (costs ~1k, we give $250) and Iron Chef (costs ~1k and we give $150) Graduation costs are around $1k. Last year we had $200 to give. This year? Marcie will contact some teachers and we will form a sub-committee to talk about what the staff wants and how the PTO can help. Marcie will report back with interested teachers in February.
Principal’s Corner – Marcie Lewis
· Marcie spoke mostly about the Family School Partnership team. Parents are welcome to join at any time. 2 events coming up for a limited audience – a math night and a literacy night to engage families not usually involved in school. Both nights will include dinner, childcare, real world problem solving and prizes)
· Gabi Baumann brought in a design specialist to look at the climate of the school entryway. The committee is talking about different ways to improve this area and the costs associated. Some ideas include plantings, opening up the auditorium and putting in benches.
Sports Communications – Kate Belluche
· Kate presented a document outlining expectations for student athletes/parents and expectations for communications from coaches. Kate also compiled feedback from parents of student athletes regarding sports communication challenges. Parents are interested in having both paper and on-line documents prior to try-outs, team rosters, and updated practice/game schedules. Especially necessary is getting out info about the different sports offered at Hunt and info about trying out during the first week of school. Sixth grade parents especially experienced unnecessary stress due to this lack of communication. Marcie will take these concerns to the sports director and report back in February.
Fundraising Update- Gabi Baumann
Pancake breakfast planned for March 17th. Volunteers from 7-1, serving from 8:30-11:30. Concurrent silent auction. Committee working on getting food donated as well as securing items for the auction. Auction items can come from community as well as Hunt parents – handmade items and services welcome as well. Tickets will be sold ahead of time and at the door. Committee needs help getting auction items – will announce on blog.
Gabi has been looking into possible school signs. Folks agree that digital is better than having to arrange plastic letters. Gabi will continue looking into whether the school has any rights/frontage on North Avenue.
Other

  • Low meeting attendance. Kate will review past sign-ins and gently remind past attendees that they are missed at the meetings.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:25pm
Next Meeting: Thursday, 2/9/12, 7-8pm

"Miss Representation" Film and Panel Discussion-Tuesday, January 17, 2012
The Vermont Girls Collaborative is hosting a free and open to the public showing of the film "Miss Representation" followed by a panel discussion on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 6:30pm. to 9:30pm. at The Savoy Theatre, 26 Main Street, Montpelier, VT.
The film's goals are to start a cross-generational movement to shift the cultural mindset of communities, interrupt and stop patterns of sexism, change the way women and girls are represented in the media and ensure a tipping point that will lead to gender parity in leadership throughout the U.S.
After the film, panelists Donna McAllister of the Vermont Department of Education, Bethany Pombar of the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and Kelly Walsh of the Vermont Works for Women will discuss the portrayal of women in the media, what this means here in Vermont/New Hampshire and what positive steps each person can take to combat these messages.
The Vermont Girls Collaborative is a network of programs across Vermont working to leverage the power of girls' programs through sharing resources, ideas and relationships, promote girl's' well-being and social equity, expand the capacity of girls' programs to meet the needs of Vermont Girls. Sports Communication  The PTO is interested in gathering your thoughts and experiences around the Sports program - specifically, we are interested in your ideas about providing better communication with families so parents know what is expected and where your child should be for practices/games.  If you have any thoughts or ideas to share, we will be compiling this information during the next few weeks.  Send your thought to:
huntmiddleschool@gmail.com

Grease  Plans are being hatched for the Spring production of Grease.  Information will be coming home soon with specifics about auditioning and permission.  Everyone who auditions will get a part.  Please encourage your child to consider joining the play.  All three elementary schools (Flynn, CP Smith and Sustainability Academy) have strong theatre programs thanks to active PTO's, great leadership and the Direction of Don Wright and the Very Merry Theatre.  At Hunt, we hope to continue to offer a rich theatre experience to as many students as we can reach.  Practices will be after school and the final performances will take place at the end of March.  Students will be expected to maintain a C average or better to participate and we will follow the same reporting procedure as the sports program.  Check out the DVD with your child and reacquaint yourself with all the fun songs.  Hunt will be doing a G version of Grease.  We have already ordered the scripts.  Please let us know if you have any concerns and we would be happy to go over the script with you.

Auditions will take place in mid January and rehearsals will start around the 9th of February - just after basketball ends(!) Rehearsals will start at 3:15 after a brief snack in the cafeteria.  Contact Sarah Smith at sarah@esptrans.com or Kim Hunt at khunt@bsdvt.org with questions or concerns.
