Hunt PTO Update 3/27/13



IMPORTANT UPDATE!!
SNOW DAY MAKE-UPS EFFECTS GRADUATION DATE
8TH GRADUATION HAS MOVED TO JUNE 13TH

Due to the snow day on Friday, Feb 8th and March 19th school has been extended to Friday, June 14th which will be a half day for 6th and 7th grade only. Sixth and seventh grade students will be released at 11:30 on both June 13 & 14. The last day for 8th grade students will be Graduation Day, June 13th. More information will follow.








Hunt PTO meeting March 21, 2013




Box Tops for education. The PTO will be passing the box top program over to the student council so students can be involved in raising money for their own events at school.




Hunts middle school garden. Participants voted on a farm to school proposal of $1500. The half acre garden behind the middle school is not funded by the district. Funding for the garden comes from grants, individual donations and in-kind donations. All Hunt students receive garden education through interdisciplinary lessons. The PTO approved the request and monies will be spent towards fall education in the garden.




Pajama game. Production manager Kim Hunt spoke about the upcoming production of the pajama game. This program is not funded by the school nor is it productions of the PTO, so all funds have to be raised through donations, fund raisers and grants. Participating families are being asked to pay a share of the cost to help keep this program sustainable. It costs around $100 per participant. No child will be excluded if they cannot pay.




Hunt digital sign. The PTO has been working on researching location and cost of digital sign over the past year. You have been granted permission from the veterinarian center and from the city to pursue putting up a sign. Between last year and this year, we have restricted $7000 towards the purchase and installment of the sign. It appears we are moving from the planning phase to the implementation phase.




Capstone program. Mrs. Pawlusiak has five student capstone projects and is looking for community mentors for each project. Projects include astronomy, fitness, website design, cupcake business and the stock market. If you have any contacts that might be helpful in any of these areas, please contact Diane at dpawlusi@bsdvt.org and she can follow up with more information.




Principal corner. Teachers are continuing with technology training as Hunt gets ready for 1:1 computers next fall.


Student achievement celebrations are still in the process of being changed and updated. (The PTO is committed to following up on this). At present there will be a student achievement celebration sometime in April which will include not just academic achievement but sports, arts and unified arts achievement. We have not been given a date yet, but it will be at the end of the school day. Parents will be invited to the assembly.

Transitions Hunt is busy communicating with parents and students about the transition to BHS. In April, the focus will be on reaching out to elementary schools for the transition from five to grade 6. There will be a parent information meeting on May 21 for parents of graders. The PTO is looking for some parents to attend to be informal helpers.




Technology grant. The PTO voted to approve a $2000 technology grants submitted by Kathy Hevey. The money will be to purchase audio and video equipment for students working on film projects at school. The equipment will be available for all teams and teachers.

Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction was another very successful event for the PTO - Thank you especially to Susan Rutherford and Gabi Baumann on their leadership and work to pull this off. The event raised just under $7,000.




Annual Hunt Heritage Dinner scheduled for April 11th. This annual potluck celebrates the diversity of families at Hunt and brings them together to share traditional food and good company. Families supply a potluck dish and the PTO/Family School Partnership will supply plates/utensils, dessert and a great line up of student entertainment. Jen Sutton is requesting parent help on the night of for set up/breakdown and some prep before the event. Contact Jen at jsutton@bsdvt.org




Meetings On the May agenda we will be discussing grants for the unified arts – physical education, music, languages, art, healthy living, Tech Ed.

Dear Set Day crew--

20 volunteers gathered in the Hunt School art room this past Saturday to build the set for Pajama Game. Many thanks to everyone who participated-- names below. Special thanks to Martine Gulick for bringing by pizza for lunch!

Final prep for tech day will be on Friday March 29, beginning about 4:30 pm. There will be staging to assemble, replica sewing machines to finish, some detail painting, and gray facade to attach to the staging. The more people we have, the quicker it will go. Screw guns with philips bits will be helpful for this task. Please RSVP to Alex Messinger if you can join in, even for an hour!

It’s a Pajama Raffle!

What? Hunt Drama Program will raffle off pajamas in many sizes & colors, and two $25 gift certificates from Hatley’s, and a beautiful nightgown from Bertha’s on Church St.


When? The raffle will be held on Friday, April 5th only! Tickets will be sold before the show & during intermission. Winners announced at the end of the show.



Cost? Each ticket will be sold for $1.00 or 6 tickets for $5.00 (better deal).

Why? Because our spring musical is called “The Pajama Game”, of course, and it’s a fun way to get a great pair of pajamas, a nightgown, or gift certificates at a great price and support the Hunt Drama Program. It’s a win-win!!

WHAT: Run 1 mile laps on a course around Hunt Middle School, collectively covering 520 miles!

520 miles = distance from Burlington, VT to Washington, DC!

WHEN: Saturday, April 13th, 2013,    9 AM to 1 PM 

WHY: To raise money for Hunt’s Close Up Washington program which will take students to Washington, D.C. over April break.

HOW: Pay an admission price and run as many laps as you can! 

The GOAL is to reach 520 miles collectively 
(the distance from Burlington to D.C.!) 

Snacks and beverages will be provided for all runners!  Run as much as you want and take as many breaks as you need.

Suggested entry donation: 

Students: $5 

Adults: $8 

Families: $15 max

Very ambitious students could also take DONATION FORMS and ask friends/family for donations per mile!

Hunt PTO Update 3/20/13

Thanks to everyone who attended the 
PTO Pancake Breakfast & Silent Auction

On Saturday morning in the HMS Cafeteria, hundreds of students, parents, Hunt staff, and community members enjoyed pancakes, fresh fruit, and drinks while bidding on 180 silent auction donations in an effort to raise money for Hunt Middle School's PTO. The event raised approximately $6,500 for school-wide enrichment programs!! Great job everyone!!

Real VT organic maple syrup still available to purchase directly. Quart sized mason jars available at $12 each. This is a great price for any syrup. Even Costco sells a quart of syrup for $15 and it's not organic! If you would like to purchase one or more of these quarts of syrup, please contact Susan Rutherford at 951-2571 or susanrutherford@hotmail.com.  First come, first served. Also available are 3 online gift certificates for Papa John pizzas. Each certificate is good for one large, one topping pizza to be ordered online only.  Each certificate will be sold for $9 but is worth up to $15. Don't forget all proceeds from these items go towards programs for your kids!!


Thank you to all our local businesses, shop owners, community members and parents who donated food and silent auction items, without which this event would not have been possible!

Special thanks for working above and beyond the call of duty goes to Principal Amato for arriving at 7 a.m. and working with us until the very end. (watching the UVM game with you was especially fun, even though we lost). Thanks as well goes to Jeff, one of Hunt's custodians, and to Chris, Julie and Dan from the Hunt kitchen for supporting our fundraising efforts and always being there for us when we have a question or problem.

Bring: paintbrushes (labeled), tools (cordless drills with philips bits), and/or old clothes for painting.



Highlights include -

· Building/painting a vintage coke machine, refrigerator, sewing machines
· Creating a knife-throwing special effect (who will volunteer to test that one?)
· Creating a pajama factory out of plywood and 2 x 4's!

All are welcome - Whether or not you have a child in the play, we would love your participation!

Hunt PTO Update 3/13/2013




Huge Silent Auction & Pancake Breakfast 
this Saturday morning!

HUGE Pancake Breakfast & Silent Auction THIS Saturday!
The PTO fundraising committee has been working very hard in preparation for our upcoming Pancake Breakfast & Silent Auction on March 16th. With breakfast made for you and over $8,000 worth of items up for bid, we are sure this is going to be another memorable and highly successful event.     


WHAT:  Hunt PTO's Pancake Breakfast & Silent Auction

WHERE: HMS Cafeteria 

WHY: To raise money for 8th grade graduation, 6th grade orientation picnic, Jr. Iron Chef, school-wide assemblies, financial support to teachers and staff for field trips and supplies, and many other valuable activities and programs for enrichment. 

WHEN: Saturday, 3/16, from 8:30a.m. until 11:30a.m. Bidding closes at 11:30 am. 

COST: Pancake Breakfast $6 adult, $4 kids, free for kids under 3, and $15 family of 4. No entrance fee for auction & you do not have to pay for breakfast to bid on silent auction items (we just hope you will).

Coffee Break  Fundraiser 
at BOTH Williston I-89 rest areas 
on Sunday, March 17th

Coffee Break Fundraiser at BOTH Williston rest areas on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th!

The students who will be traveling to Washington, DC and Philadelphia in April have set up a Coffee Break fundraising event on March 17th from 8am to 6pm. The group will have BOTH the northbound and southbound Williston rest areas booked for the day. 

If you are able to donate in any way to this cause, here is what is needed:

coffee donations 

individually-wrapped baked goods and snacks 

sugar, sugar substitute, creamer, cups, napkins, stirrers and lids for the coffee cups

Youth Risk Behavior Survey to be administered on Tuesday, March 12th, at Hunt.

Our school is participating in the Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) sponsored by the Vermont Department of Education and the Vermont Department of Health. We are planning to administer the survey on March 12, 2013. For more information go to our website:   http://ow.ly/iGKlE

VERMONT YOUTH RISK SURVEY
Dear Parent and/or Guardian:

Our school is participating in the Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) sponsored by the Vermont Department of Education and the Vermont Department of Health. The survey gathers information about health risk behaviors of 6th through 8th grade students. Questions are asked about nutrition, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, physical exercise, and injuries. Schools, communities and state agencies will use the results of the survey to evaluate programs, plan new programs and to secure future funding.

We are planning to administer the survey on March 12, 2013.

The Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in conjunction with state and local school officials, developed the YRBS. It also has the support of many national organizations including the National PTA.

The YRBS is anonymous, and survey procedures have been designed to protect your child’s privacy. The names of students who take the survey and the survey responses will not be disclosed to any school employee nor will any student’s name or survey responses be divulged in a report of the results. We would like students to take part in the survey; however, the survey is voluntary. No student is required to take the survey. As a parent of a student eligible to participate in the YRBS, federal law affords you the right too inspect the survey before it is administered and to opt your child out of participating in the survey.

Should you decide to opt your child out of taking the survey please inform us in writing by returning the enclosed form on the backside or email Hunt School by March 11, 2013.

Update: The families of Hunt Middle School have collected 2 Full boxes of shoes and they have been mailed to ShoeBox Recycling to be sent to places in the world where recycled shoes are re-used. Keep up the great work!! Recycled shoes are great for local economies and keep our environment clean! 

Send your pre-loved sneakers, dress shoes, sports shoes, and
sandals to school to be placed in the ShoeBox collection bin to the left of the front door. The student council will organize all the shoes and send them to ShoeBox Recycling to be re-used and NOT end up in the landfill.
