Hunt Middle School PTO Blog - 10/27/17

Dear Hunt Families-

Please see below an important update to the school year calendar from the Superintendent's Office. This update will also be posted onto the BSDVT website calendar.

Important Updates to the 2017-18 School Year CalendarThe Superintendent’s Office has made the following changes to the SY 17-18 District Calendar to account for student days lost during the work stoppage in September. These school days are being made up in March rather than June to allow for greater instructional value and to prevent extending the school year.

  • Tuesday, March 6 -School will be in session on Town Meeting Day, ending spring break one day earlier for students. Teacher in-service will no longer take place that day.
  • Thursday, March 22 will now be a full day of school. It was originally scheduled for a half-day followed by parent/teacher conferences.
  • Friday, March 23 will now be a half-day of school for students followed by parent/teacher conferences. It was originally scheduled as a “ no school” day in the District and a full day of conferences.

There will be added time made available for spring parent/teacher conferences to accommodate this modified District calendar. This will happen on a school by school basis.

The tentative last day of school remains Wednesday, June 13th as originally planned, subject to change if there are snow days this winter. Any snow days that occur will be made up in June. BHS Graduation will still take place on Thursday, June 14th at 10 AM and will not change.

Hunt Middle School PTO Blog - April 30, 2017

National Teacher Appreciation week starts Monday!

Tomorrow begins a week of appreciation for all teachers that help guide our children all year long.  Let's show them how special they are!! All parents are encouraged to show their support in some small way, either by a handmade card or sign, flowers, snacks, treats, goodies, beverages.  On your next trip to the grocery store, maybe pick up something a little extra for the teachers.

Goodies can be brought in to the office each day.  They will be placed in the staff room for all to enjoy.

This is a very special opportunity to show our teachers how much we care!

Thank-you on behalf of the PTO!

Principal’s Report

April 20, 2017

We are very pleased to welcome our new long-term substitute French teacher, Monsieur Baptiste Delvalle. Monsieur Delvalle is a native speaker of French and is bringing a language immersion approach to instruction in French. He has worked with our after school program teaching French through cooking. Our students are already benefitting from Baptiste’s engaging efforts.

Our student performers recently completed their very successful drama production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This production, made possible by our partnership with the Very Merry Theatre Company, provided an opportunity for more than sixty Hunt Middle School students to be involved in a first-rate theatre performance. Special thanks go to Very Merry’s Don Wright for his great work with our students. Felix Nadworny starred as Willy Wonka and  Will Belluche starred as Charlie. It really was a fantastic show and all of the cast and crew did a great job!

With spring upon us we are busy planning for the end of our school year which will be here before we know it. Due to weather-related school closures during our snowy winter our last day of school will now be Monday, June 19th. Our eighth grade promotion ceremony has been moved to Thursday, June 15th at 1:00 P.M. Another very special annual event to which we are looking forward happens on Friday, May 26th when we host next year’s sixth grade students for our annual Step Up Day. On Step Up Day current fifth graders will visit Hunt to learn all about our school and the awesome learning experiences that lie ahead during their middle school years. More information on these exciting HMS events will be sent out to families soon.

We are also gearing up for our eighth grade class trip. This year, as in the past several years, our HMS eighth graders will be taking a class trip to the Six Flags-Great Adventure Amusement Park in Lake George, New York. Students are currently raising funds for their trip through a cookie dough sale. Please consider purchasing a tub of cookie dough from an HMS eighth grader or from our main office to help support this fun culminating experience for our students.

Our aforementioned HMS play was made possible through the efforts of many parent and guardian volunteers who eagerly donated their time and talents to providing a high quality dramatic experience for our students. These efforts included set construction, costume design, makeup application, coaching and instruction on acting, singing and dancing, and many other tasks. These volunteers’ dedication and role-modeling are invaluable to making our yearly drama production a success. Special thanks go to a special group of parents who have been enthusiastic and active supporters of our drama program during the years that they have had students at Hunt. Colby Kervick, Brooks Elder, Kate Belluche, Bella Nadworny and Kat Kleman have dedicated countless hours to helping make our drama productions fantastic experiences for many, many past and present Hunt students.

Respectfully Submitted,

Leonard H. Phelan, HMS Principal

April PTO Meeting Minutes

Math Counts Update
Parent Kate Stein has been working with 4 boys in the Math Counts competition at UVM. Shout out to Allen Matson for all his help! She also shared that HMS came in  2nd place in the middle school scholar’s bowl, behind Mater Christi.  4 boys participated.  We could sponsor a team and provide tshirts. Consider sponsoring the teams and putting in the budget for next year.

Geo Bee Update
Seven students have signed up to participate next month in the GeoBee,  at Essex middle, representing the HMS team.

PTO President’s Report

The Hunt PTO will need new leadership for next year. Please consider it.  Next month (May) is our last meeting for the school year.

At this time, the only remaining fundraising the PTO has planned are the end-of-the-year concert bake sales:

Band Concert -May 24
Chorus Concert- June 7

We will set up a Signup Genius and need a lead person to coordinate.

HMS T-shirts!  The PTO will sell at 6th grade Parent information night scheduled for May 25th and will do another round of flyers home with students.  2 sample shirts have been donated to the office for display. Could we get Student Council support?

May 8 is deadline to submit dates for printed 2017-2018 BSD calendar.  Need to decide on next year’s events: Back-to-School social, Harvest Dinner? Breakfast/Auction, Plant Sale? Other?

District mediation updates can be found on BSD homepage, link for negotiations page.

Treasurer’s report – Paula Henry
Checking account balance eff 3/31/17 is $9,554.  Of this, $5,708 is unrestricted.  Approved outstanding funding requests and budgeted expenses total $1,580.

New Business

  • Update on the Play -  huge success!  We are losing 2 of the 3 production managers next year.  Volunteers needed to take this on.
  • Update on new fundraiser - Pancake Breakfast/Auction, brought in ~$2,400.  Great volunteers, cooks, donations, and attendees. Hope to see more staff next year! Will donate $150 proceeds from 50/50 raffle to local food pantry.  Where to distribute remaining funds?
  • Staff Appreciation week starts May 1.  Choose date to do something nice for Staff. Last year, goodies and flowers. Need someone to lead, set up Sign-up Genius.
  • New HMS magnets to replace the traditional HMS Honor roll bumper stickers.  This will be a way to celebrate all student success, and incorporate the new HMS logo for recognition in the community.  Will look into pricing.

Last meeting of 2016-2017 is May 18th.  Need 6th-7th grade parents to attend!

Message From Yaw Obeng, Superintendent

Greetings:

This time of year the Superintendent’s Office receives questions about the administrative hiring process and administrator placement for the next school year, like “can I be part of a hiring team?” and “who will my child’s Principal be?”

Hiring and developing leaders is both an art and a science. Investigating the previous process a year ago, parents, administrators, and media spoke about inequities that tookplace. The consensus was to do something different. So last year our District embarked on a new administrative hiring process based on research-based leadership competencies, comments and reflections received from staff and parents from previous hiring processes. School Board’s Request for Open and Public Negotiations Refused by Union

The Burlington School Board has been negotiating a new teachers’ contract with the Burlington Education Association (BEA) since last fall to replace the current contract that expires this August. The Board requested open negotiating sessions so the community could be well informed throughout the process. The Board’s negotiating team made these requests to the BEA at several closed-door bargaining sessions and in written communications between October 2016 and February 2017. The Union has, however, rejected these requests.

In an effort to understand the status of this issue across the State, the School Board checked with the Vermont School Boards Association (VSBA) and the Vermont Superintendents Association (VSA) and learned that nearly 60 percent of districts currently bargaining are doing so in open session.

“The people of Burlington want transparency,” said Mark Porter, Chair of the Burlington School Board of Commissioners. “We’ve made a concerted effort from the beginning to follow the same open negotiation process that many other school districts in Vermont have begun, but the BEA has not agreed to hold contract talks in public, in response to our many requests to do so.”

Approved Ballot Items Set Tone for the Future of the Burlington School District

The District’s Fiscal Year ‘18 budget and $19 million infrastructure improvement bond ballot items both passed by significant margins on Town Meeting Day.

Unofficial results released by the Burlington City Clerk’s Office show that the budget was approved by 3,905 - 2,717 votes and the bond passed by a 5,047 - 1,552 margin.

“The budget and bond were both thoughtfully developed by the School Board to meet the needs of students as we look to the future,” Superintendent Yaw Obeng said. “I want to thank the voters of Burlington for supporting the vision of the District, and I look forward to sharing our accomplishments in the coming year.”

The approved bond will be part of a new capital improvement fund to address deferred maintenance items in schools throughout the District. Implementation planning for this capital program will begin in the coming months.

Remember to Vote on March 7th!

On Town Meeting Day, March 7, the Burlington School District will seek voter approval on two separate articles:

1) a $85.5 million FY '18 general fund budget;

2) a $19 million bond to address deferred building maintenance.

Included in the proposed $85.5 million FY '18 general fund budget is $100,000 in debt service repayment for the new $19 million bond. The authority to bond must be approved separately from the budget. In developing the budget, District leadership included the debt service payment for FY '18 so the funds would be available for that expense if the bond was approved. Therefore, the approval of the bond will not add any additional expense to the FY '18 budget.

FLETCHER FREE LIBRARY HOSTS A TRAVELING SMITHSONIAN EXHIBITION“EXPLORING HUMAN ORIGINS”

Burlington, VT — Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean to Be Human?, a national traveling exhibition of the Smithsonian Institution, will be on display at the Fletcher Free Library through March 17, 2017.

Through panels, interactive kiosks, hands-on displays and videos, Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean to Be Human? invites audiences to explore milestones in the evolutionary journey of becoming human — from walking upright, creating technology and eating new foods, to brain enlargement and the development of symbolic language and complex societies — advancements that define the unique position of humans in the history of life.

Based on the Smithsonian’s What Does It Mean to Be Human? permanent exhibition hall at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Exploring Human Origins: What Does It Mean to Be Human? seeks to shed light on what we know about human origins and how we know it. The exhibition welcomes different cultural perspectives on evolution and seeks to foster positive dialogue and a respectful exploration of the science.

“The topic of human evolution is fascinating, we are proud that the Fletcher Free Library can help encourage a constructive, informative discussion on the subject,” said Mary Danko, Fletcher Free’s Library Director. “We encourage people of all beliefs to explore the exhibition and participate in associated programming, and delve into human origins in a way that is captivating and relevant.”

Please visit the exhibit website for a complete calendar of programming and events. Core partners in this initiative are the University of Vermont (UVM) and the University of Vermont Medical Center, St. Michael’s College, Champlain College, RETN, and the Friends of the Fletcher Free Library.
