The Stone Circle at Hunt

New at the Stone Circle

Beautiful new shrubs, plants and a tree have been planted around our stone circle recently, and as you can see, they look great. Be sure to stop and take a look at your fundraising dollars at work!  Thanks to Bella Nadworny, Gabi Baumann, and Susan Rutherford for purchasing and planting these new additions to our garden.

Come to the Hunt Perennial Plant and School-wide Yard Sale on May 25th!

Hunt Middle School PTO is holding the
4th Annual New North End Perennial Plant and School-wide Yard sale, on May 25th.

Don't forget Hunt's annual Perennial Plant and Yard Sale will be held on May 25th from 8:30-2:00pm. You can't beat the prices anywhere and your money will help pay for a few, much needed and attractive, outside trash receptacles, in front of our school.

Perennial plants can be dropped off at 50 Sunset Drive now, or next week in the grassy area between the parking lots at Hunt. Identifying your plants' names will help organizers a lot! Yard sale items will be collected only on May 24th, starting at 3pm, in the cafeteria. Questions about the sale and to volunteer, please contact susanrutherford@hotmail.com or 951-2571. High School and scout volunteers welcome.

Hunt Garden Committee is looking for a few people to help with watering the gardens this spring and summer. If you can help water for one week or if you can help water one day per week, anything you can do will help. High school students and scouts are welcome!! Contact Susan (also above) if you can help.

Hunt's Student Council collects used shoes, sandals and boots for Hunt's shoe recycling program!!

The collection box went missing for a few days, but it's back in the front entrance of Hunt and ready for the collection of your pre-loved shoes, sneakers, boots, athletic foot wear, and sandals. Don't let those shoes fill our landfills! ShoeBox recycling will get them to people who need them, because most shoes still have some life left in them. Simply bring your old shoes to Hunt, place them in the specially marked box, in the front entrance of the school, and a member of the student council will send them to ShoeBox Recycling. Thanks for doing your part! Contact susanrutherford@hotmail.com with any questions. The band, choir, and orchestra concerts are great times to bring them to Hunt!!

North Avenue News – May Superintendent’s Message

As we enter the final weeks of school, we continue to focus on improving student achievement. Burlington High School is piloting a student-centered, end of the year studies program (YES Program) for all students that will involve internships, independent studies, and collaborative problem solving in areas of student interest. This pilot enters the concept of learning proficiencies, also known as graduate expectations, as the two communities have been discussing all year. If you are interested in weighing in on this discussion of graduate expectations, you can offer feedback electronically at http://www.partnershipforchangevt.org, where you can see our first draft and add your voice to the discussion.

*The Partnership for Change Announces Director

The Partnership for Change is pleased to announce the hiring of Hal Colston as its Director. The Director is responsible for leading the Partnership’s efforts to help build a prosperous future for the Burlington and Winooski communities by remodeling our schools for the 21st Century. Hal will work closely with a broad and diverse group of stakeholders, including school administrators, students, teachers, parents, and community partners, to support school change. He will guide the Partnership as it enhances the capacity for new and innovative practices in our schools and advances our vision of an educational system in which every student graduates well prepared for success in today’s world. For more information about Hal and the Partnership for Change, visit http://www.partnershipforchangevt.org/.

    *Summer Camps in Burlington!

Representatives from six Burlington organizations (Boys & Girls Club, Sara Holbrook Community Center, YMCA, King Street Community Center, Burlington Parks & Recreation, Burlington School District Summer School) and Child Care Resource will gather to present detailed information for parents and kids about upcoming summer programs. Interpreters will be available to help answer any questions. You can sign your student up for any of these programs on the spot. Refreshments, snacks, and youth activities including face painting will be provided!

Champlain Elementary: Tuesday, May 7th from 5 pm – 7 pm.
Flynn Elementary: Monday, May 13th from 5 pm – 7 pm.

Contact Ali Dieng with any questions: (802) 316-0731 or adieng@bsdvt.org.

*Weekly Release Day Schedule Considered for 2013-14

The Burlington School District is considering a weekly release Wednesday schedule for the 2013-14 school year for grades k-8, with a 1:45 p.m. dismissal on Wednesdays all year. This schedule would replace all other early release days except for two parent conferences. The change is being considered due to a state mandate for restructuring that includes identifying dedicated time for Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) intended to increase student achievement. We have posted information to the web at http://www.bsdvt.org to explain PLCs and answer common questions about the changes being considered. The decision on the weekly release Wednesdays will be made by mid-May as we complete our restructuring mandate.

As always, I welcome comments, suggestions and observations. Contact me at superintendent@bsdvt.org or call 802.862.8274. Also, like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter @BTVSchools to keep up with all that happening in the Burlington Schools!

4th Annual New North End Perennial Plant and School-wide Yard sale, on May 25th

Don't compost those healthy perennial plants, flowers, and herbs! Save them for the 4th Annual New North End Perennial Plant and School-wide Yard sale, on May 25th 8:30-2:00pm. All proceeds will support the purchase of outside garbage cans, and shrubs for Hunt's new front entrance gardens.

Are you looking for a great reason to thin your flower beds? Look no further! Simply dig up your extra plants and place them in boxes lined with plastic, plastic bags or in pots. Then, starting May 10th through May 22nd, from 3-6pm, leave them in the grassy area in the center of our parking lot. (Look for the potting soil, plastic pots, and signs marking the spot!) Volunteers will divide and re-pot your plants for the sale.

Yard sale donations will be gratefully accepted May 24th from 3-7pm at Hunt School. (Sorry, we cannot accept early yard sale donations due to space considerations). To arrange for pick-up or drop-off of your donated perennials or yard sale items, or to volunteer, please contact Susan at 951-2571 or susanrutherford@hotmail.com. High School and middle school student volunteers welcome!

    Spotlight – Superintendent’s Column

    Greetings all,

The sun is trying to be out and the marsh is muddy—we are officially in mud season, with spring near! In this season, the Board reorganizes. We have three new members (Liz Curry, Miriam Stoll and Greg Jenkins) and a new chair (Alan Matson). Board committee assignments will be out shortly and the Board is working to realign its work with District goals. Stay tuned for more on this.

A topic that has captured the ears of many is the Vision Calendar, which is being considered by the Champlain Valley Superintendents Association (CVSA). CVSA is responsible each year for setting a common regional 175 day calendar that aligns with the two technical centers in our region. The Vision Calendar takes those same 175 days and reformats it so that school is chunked into six to seven-week learning periods, with a time of reflection between each chunk. That one to two-week break could be used for timely student intervention through a Title 1 Program, faculty professional development, vacation and reflection, coursework for faculty, etc. Just as our December-June stretch does now, it allows everyone to pause and take a breath as the learning continues. It is intentional and focused on student achievement.

As mentioned above, the number of days does not change for students or staff. The school year would likely start one week earlier in August and end one week later in June. The summer is still quite lengthy for summer jobs, professional development and camps. Opportunities for vacations for families at off times is an added bonus. CVSA is talking with child care providers about camps and child care during the intersession weeks.

The discussion is just beginning. CVSA would need to decide by January 2014 if it were to take place in the 2014-15 school year. Share your thoughts and questions with me—I will bring them to CVSA. I will also post a sample Vision Calendar to my blog (http://collinsj.wordpress.com) when I receive it.

Think differently—how might this benefit both students and staff?

    Enjoy spring.

Sample Vision Calendar and Interssession Overview

A message from your Ward 4 school commissioners:

Discussion is circulating about one of the options the school district is examining for increasing student achievement, a possible early release on Wednesdays. In addition to its ongoing efforts, the district is following up on Agency of Education recommendations, and conducting a restructuring analysis. A significant part of this is to find how best to create dedicated teacher time to review student data and adjust instruction accordingly. To do so may include expanding to the entire district the kind of change in the end of the school day that has already been in place at Hunt and the Sustainability Academy, and mornings at BHS.

Many people have contacted us about this, concerned that it will be implemented without public input. Rest assured this is not the case.

Here’s where things stand right now. This proposal – it may be more accurate to call it a pre-proposal – is still being vetted by the district’s administration. That process includes careful study of any district wide rollout, including identifying barriers to implementation, such as child and after school care, and CCTA’s ability to accommodate any changes.

It is important to understand that this is why the concept has not yet been widely circulated. The work to flesh the proposal out, and get answers to the important questions parents will have, is not finished.

Once that step is complete, the proposal will be brought forward to families and the public at large for input and a full discussion. How this proposal impacts family schedules and student learning time are important issues and will be a part of that discussion.

For an idea of what is being considered, here is an excerpt from a brief overview Superintendent Collins provided to School Board members:

“We are looking at all options of when this work (dedicated teacher time) can occur, and have piloted an early release with child care option at Hunt Middle and Sustainability Academy with success. For example, at SA the student day is extended by 15 minutes four days a week, and students are dismissed one hour early on Wednesdays with child care options for that hour in the school. In this way, there is no net loss of instructional time and children are still supervised during the early release, if parents wish. Teachers then have a 2-hour uninterrupted block of time to work in teams and review student data, instructional methods and adjust and align instruction. We are exploring if this option can benefit the district and looking at barriers such as child care and after school programming if we are able to do this, so that students would continue to have full days. “

Early release has been reviewed in committee, and any final proposal will be studied carefully by the Board and follow procedure to arrive at a decision that will be in the best interest of our students.

More information will be available once any proposal is ready for public input and comment. We recommend everyone visit the district website http://bsdvt.org to see committee and full board meeting and agenda information. Typically, our meetings are held on Tuesday, and all board members welcome input.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us about this and other matters.

    Kind regards,

    Ben Truman and Bernie O'Rourke
