FREE Duct Tape Parenting Seminar!

JJ Flynn invites Hunt families to join us in welcoming parenting expert, Vickie Hoefle, to Flynn.  As middle school parents, you may remember that Vickie did a 6 week parenting series about 5 years ago for Burlington parents at Edmunds School.  The PTO's joined together to sponsor the event and parents attended for Free!  I remember her irreverent style and her advice stuck with me and completely transformed my parenting!

Vickie still does parenting seminars all over the country and has recently launched a book called Duck Tape Parenting - A less is more approach to raising respectful, responsible and resilient kids.  Flynn school is one stop on her book tour.  She will be offering tips to parents, answering parenting questions and signing books at the event.  The PTO/Family School Partnership will be providing childcare and several copies of her book will be raffled off to attendees.

Hope to see you on Wednesday, March 6th  from 6:30-8pm.  Seating is limited, so please register at www.vickihoefle.com/jjflynn or call 343-9966

Dear Friend of Education,

The Burlington Friends of Education (BFOE) is committed to supporting the 2013 school budget. We need your help. This year’s budget is a moderate increase that will allow the school district to maintain excellent programs, in addition to supporting new and innovative changes. Some of the highlights include:

  • The Year End Studies Program (YES) at BHS. This program concludes each school year by offering all students exciting, non-traditional courses. These YES courses are intensive, interest based learning experiences that take place in both the high school and the greater community. These programs are designed to enhance enthusiasm for learning. Examples of program offerings include various domestic and international trips, language and arts studies, mock trials, lifestyle and fitness courses, developing a plan for Burlington’s future and hundreds of other programs
  • Successful implementation of the Freshmen Academies. These academies have a coordinated and multi-disciplinary curriculum that have helped create a more personalized learning experience and implement the 1-to-1 computer initiative
  • Successful placement of English Language Learners (ELL) in content area classes
  •  Implementation of the 6th grade 1-to-1 technology initiative
  •  Para-educators in Kindergarten classes throughout the district
  • Thriving Magnet schools that have increased enrollment and improved test scores
In addition to academic achievements, our community is fortunate to have high-level parental involvement, math night celebrations, exceptional drama and music opportunities, and award-winning food service programs.
Here are some ways you can help Burlington Schools:

1. Please vote YES on Tuesday, March 5. Consider voting early!

2. Donate money to the BFOE. This contribution will be used to inform the public and encourage a YES vote. Checks payable to BFOE can be mailed to BFOE c/o Christopher Hood 44 Caroline Street, Burlington VT 05401. PayPal donations can be made atBurlingtonfriendsofeducation.wordpress.com

3. Volunteer for the BFOE. Please email Deirdre Donovan at donovanmitchell5@gmail.com

4. Join the BFOE mailing list to keep you up to date on upcoming activities and information related to the budget. Send an email to BFOEVT@gmail.com. We promise not to clog your inbox!

Thank you very much for supporting Burlington Schools!

pdate: The families of Hunt Middle School have collected 2 Full boxes of shoes and they have been mailed to ShoeBox Recycling to be sent to places in the world where recycled shoes are re-used. Keep up the great work!!
  • Each year, more than 300 million shoes are landfilled; how many of them could have been reused?
  • It takes more than 200 years for a sneaker to break down naturally in a landfill
Hunt Middle School is partnering with Shoe Box Recycling to recycle paired, wearable shoes. The shoes will be reused for individuals here in the U.S. and throughout the world.
This program provides affordable shoes to those in need such as those suffering from Hurricane Sandy and many others. This will keep used shoes out of the landfill, creating a cleaner and greener planet. Recycling shoes also creates micro-enterprises for individuals throughout the world, fueling local economies here and abroad.
* All paired men’s, women’s and kids shoes that are still usable. That means no holes in the soles and no wet or mildewed pairs. This includes athletic shoes, dress shoes, timberland type work boots, sandals, heels, flats
Shoes We Don’t Accept:
* Heavy Winter Boots, Skates, Blades, Flip-Flops, Slippers, Singles, Unusable, and Thrift Store Shoes.
Where to bring your reused shoes?
Place your reused shoes in the specially marked box ShoeBox Recycling found in the main lobby of Hunt School.  Questions or for larger pick-ups, contact Susan Rutherford at 951-2571 or susanrutherford@hotmail.com  “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”
Want an easy way to support your PTO that doesn’t require volunteering and won’t cost you a dime?
Save Box Tops for Education!
Update: So far HMS has earned more than $180 through this Box tops project!  Please keep the box tops coming!
Here’s how to help:
**Box Tops for Education are on the packages of hundreds of participating products that you probably use every day. All you need to do is cut them off the box they are on, stick them in a baggie, and send them to school with your child. There is a container for the Box Tops in the main office.
**Did you know that Box Tops are dated and cannot be used if they are past this expiration date??

Make yourself a note on your home or electronic calendar to send in those Box Tops!! Saving them is the first step. Sending them in before they expire is the next.
We will be collecting Box Tops all year long, so start saving and sending in your Box Tops today! The collection box will be located in the main office.
Thanks for choosing to support our school by collecting Box Tops!
Sincerely,
Susan Rutherford
