Earthquake in Nepal
April 27, 2015

There are over 200 Nepali-speaking students and their families in the BSD community. These families are both Bhutanese Nepali and Nepali.

Members of the Bhutanese Nepali community are ethnic Nepali who lived for generations in Bhutan until they were forced out in the early 1990's. Bhutanese Nepali who left Bhutan spent nearly 20 years in refugee camps in Nepal.

Many of the Nepali-speaking students in our schools were born in Nepal. The students and their families will be concerned about friends and family members still in Nepal.

If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to the Red Cross in support of those affected by the earthquake, you can use the following link:

Plant Sale Update: Unfortunately, Hunt's popular plant sale/yard sale will not happen this
year as it has in previous years. There will however be a smaller plant sale . Every year I
have between 100-200 pots that I donate for this sale from thinning my own garden- it wouldbe a shame to throw them all away this year.

The plan is to do the sale in combination with the chorus concert on May 27.
I would love to get any help you can provide in digging/preparing plants for sale. If you too
have plants in your garden that you are digging up and don't know what to do with please
consider donating them to this sale.

Also, if you have some 6-8 inch pots I would love to have them as well. All proceeds will go
to Hunt PTO which means that it will benefit your child. Please contact me with any
questions or to come dig plants. I can pick up pot donations from you or
you can drop off at Hunt. Thanks! Bella Nadworny,

                                  Burlington Schools Update

HOWARD SMITH, SUPERINTENDENT@BSDVT.ORG, INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, BURLINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT

AN INVITATION FROM INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT HOWARD SMITH

We are developing a budget cycle calendar to ensure that we allow sufficient time to study any issues that might have budget implications prior to putting forward the proposed budget for the 2016-17 school year. In order to have a draft budget proposal ready for review by November, we need to start the study process now.

The first step is to invite suggestions from community and staff members regarding the following:

1) Areas of need or interest that could require funding in excess of currently available funding levels
2) Potential opportunities to access alternative funding sources other than local funds
3) Opportunities for potential efficiencies/savings

If you have any suggestions that you think the District should consider as we begin developing our next budget proposal, please submit them via email (hsmith@bsdvt.org) by May 1 so we can put together a study plan.
