Hunt PTO Update 10/25/15

Hey There Hunt Families -  Hope you were able to join Hunt last Thursday for the Harvest Dinner and to enjoy a delicious meal, great music and delightful company!  Special thanks to Deb Anger and Michelle Virun for their organization of such a massive event!  Also HUGE thanks to the School Food Project and Mr. Olzenack for the food and music that filled our spirits and bellies!

The PTO collected $150 from the movie ticket raffle and that money goes right back into Hunt school programs - thanks!

Most Likely to Succeed Make the time to see this movie!  It is inspiring to see what other schools are doing and really thought provoking....  What do we want for our children?  For Burlington schools?  From the Partnership for Change?

The final screening of this movie will be held at the Vermont International Film Festival on 10/31 at 12:45pm in the Main Street Landing Black Box Theatre.  Executive Producer, Ted Dintersmith, along with Vermont educators will sit for a panel discussion after the film.

For most of the last century, entry-level jobs were plentiful, and college was an affordable path to a fulfilling career. That world no longer exists. The feature-length documentary Most Likely to Succeed examines the history of education, revealing the growing shortcomings of our school model in todayʼs innovative world. Directed by acclaimed documentarian Greg Whiteley, the film has been named “among the best edu-documentaries ever produced” by Education Week, and called a “smart and engaging look at education in the 21st century” by The Hollywood Reporter. Film Threat stated that “this film should be a required course for all parents and educators.” Most Likely To Succeed is an official selection of many of the nation’s top film festivals, including the prestigious 2015 Sundance Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival. www.mltsfilm.org

Mathcounts Club at HMS meets every Tuesday morning at 7:15-8am.  This club is led by EMS math teacher Alan Matson and Hunt parent, Chip Hart.  This club is for students of all abilities who have an interest/passion for math.  I hear(d) from my own children that at the beginning, it can be a little overwhelming and they felt like they couldn't begin to tackle some of the math problems, but over time they developed some great skills and confidence in taking on seemingly impossible challenges.  It is a great group of kids and adults that really support one another.
Might this be a (free) club that your child will enjoy?  Just show up Tuesday mornings at 7:15 - pop into the office and Ms. Virun will send you to the right classroom!

More about Mathcounts:  The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that strives to engage middle school students of all ability and interest levels in fun, challenging math programs, in order to expand their academic and professional opportunities. Middle school students exist at a critical juncture in which their love for mathematics must be nurtured, or their fear of mathematics must be overcome. MATHCOUNTS provides students with the kinds of experiences that foster growth and transcend fear to lay a foundation for future success.
For more than 30 years MATHCOUNTS has provided enriching, extracurricular opportunities to students and free, high-quality resources to educators. Every child is unique, but we believe allchildren are capable of seeing the beauty and joy of math, whether they come to us already passionate about math, or intimidated by it.
There are many paths to math. We work to ensure that all students discover theirs.

Believe it or not, planning and preparations for our Spring musical are already underway!  We are soliciting grants, play supplies and setting up for our first planning/production meeting.  Might your kiddo be interested in being a cast or crew member of the play?  If so, we need your involvement too!  While we pay Very Merry Theatre to provide the professional instruction (Stage Director, Music Director, Dancing instruction) the bulk of the production work falls on parent volunteers - we write grants, run the backstage, supervise rehearsals, organize and lead vols to build the stage, sew costumes, organize money making ventures like bakesales and flower sales, craft a playbill...  there are tasks for everyone!

Mark your Calendar!  Production Meeting #1 - Wednesday, November 11th at 6:30 in the library at Hunt

Currently Gathering:  Rollerskates, Rollerblades, Bike helmets, wrist guards - middle school kid sizes (around size 5 and up...) Let us know if you have stuff to lend and/or donate!  Also, if you hear of anyone getting rid of these items, get them for us or give us a shout!  Contact Colby Kervick at ctkervick@gmail.com

Did you know?  There are security cameras located around the perimeter of HMS.  One camera is pointed towards the bike rack out front.  If your child's bike is damaged or stolen, Hunt can access the camera footage to assist you/Police in tracking down the vandal/thief.  Please don't wait too long as the footage will override itself at some point - I don't know exactly when, but I would assume every few weeks.

The Mask You Live In
showing at Merrill’s Roxy Cinema - Tuesday, October 20th at 7:00pm
This film follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men. Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the “boy crisis” and tactics to combat it. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.

*authors note - I saw this movie last year when South Burlington HS hosted it and it was a very powerful film to watch - especially if you have boys or work with boys...  Kate

Hunt PTO Update 10/12/15

Hey There Hunt Families - Hope Parent/Teacher conferences were fruitful.  If you did not get a chance to meet with your child's teacher(s) you can do so at any time.  Contact Therese Barcomb (tbarcomb@bsdvt.org) to arrange with teachers.

Looks like Fall sports are wrapping up this week and then things slow down for a few weeks!

At the end of this post are the current FUND ME! projects that teachers/teams need money for.  Unfortunately, discretionary funds for teachers are minimal to non-existant, so getting kids out of the classroom and into the community as well as hands on projects are subject to fundraising.   If we want it for our kids, then we have to help find the money...  Can you help make any of the projects a reality?  See below for more info.

TEAM / UA:  Hunt Library
PROJECT / PURCHASE: Dorothy Canfield Fisher E-books
MONEY NEEDED TO RAISE:  ~$500
The Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award is the second oldest student choice award in the United States. Each year Hunt Middle School students read any number of the 30 books on the list. If a student reads 5 or more books they will participate in voting for the DCF Award winner.

We in the library would like to support our students with e-book editions of the 2016-2017 DCF books. As students receive their iPads through the digital promise grant this would be a great way to encourage their use and help promote positive reading habits in our students.

TEAM / UA:  Solstice
PROJECT / PURCHASE:  Money to support a trip to the Flynn
MONEY NEEDED TO RAISE:  $500.00
DETAILS, DETAILS…

In January, Team  Solstice will travel by bus to see the off Broadway play, The Black Angels Over Tuskegee, at the Flynn Theater in Burlington.

  • Buses to the Flynn cost $500.00 and tickets are about $10.00 each.

Here is a synopsis about the play, taken from the Black Angels website:

Presently, one of the longest running productions Off-Broadway, originally opening in Los Angeles in  2009  then transferring to New York for a two-month engagement in 2010, the award-winning, historical docudrama is a narrative of six African American men embarking upon a journey to become the first aviators in the United States Army Air Forces during a tumultuous era of racial segregation and Jim Crow idealism in twentieth century American history.  Now in it's 6TH YEAR Black Angels Over Tuskegee, is inspired by true events.

Example of possible paid performances:
Chinese acrobats, African drumming and dance!
______________________________________________________________________________

During International Week, Hunt students and community members
make international food that is served as a taste test during all the lunches.
For example: we have made Sushi and crepes for 400 students!!!
The money is used to pay for the ingredients and international food.

TEAM / UA:  Team Solstice - Language Arts class (Mrs. Sawtell)
PROJECT / PURCHASE: Books for in-classroom library
MONEY NEEDED TO RAISE:  $100.00
DETAILS, DETAILS…

Many books that students want to read are in high demand at the library, and students are often put on a waiting list for them. I try to keep my shelves stocked with some of the more recent titles, but it can be expensive, and sometimes the books walk off. I would love any donations - both books or gift cards - to help stock my library with some newer titles.

Examples of books that are needed:
  • Any book by John Green
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower - Steven Chbosky
  • Eleanor and Park - Rainbow Rowell
  • Ms. Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children & Hollow City - Ransom Rowell
  • The Eye of Minds - James Dashner
  • Out of My Mind - Sharon Draper
  • Counting by 7’s - Holly Sloan
  • The Martian - Andy Weir
  • A Long Walk to Water - Linda Sue Park
  • The Crossover - Kwame Alexander

Thank you!

TEAM / UA:  Hunt Drama Program
PROJECT / PURCHASE: Cast trip to Skateland for a skating lesson
MONEY NEEDED TO RAISE:  $250
DETAILS, DETAILS…

Starlight Express cast members will spend a portion of the play singing, dancing and acting on skates!  We would like to take the cast to Skateland on a rehearsal day for some group bonding and safe skating instruction.   The price for rentals/skate time is $9/person.

Money donated to this event will defray  the cost of students who are unable to pay some or all of the cost for this event.  We are anticipating about 50 students will participate and 50% will be able to pay.

TEAM / UA:  Hunt Middle School
PROJECT / PURCHASE: Handicapped-accessible automatic door
MONEY NEEDED TO RAISE: $1600.00
DETAILS, DETAILS…

We are looking to secure funding sources for a handicapped-accessible automatic door opener for our front door. Our building is very accessible once inside, but the front door has proven to be a hurdle for our school community members with mobility challenges.

FUND OUR PROJECT!
Do you value music instruction/performance for EVERY child?  This might be where you want your donation to go...

TEAM / UA:  Hunt Music Department
PROJECT / PURCHASE: Instruments
MONEY NEEDED TO RAISE:  As much as possible
We have a great need among our instrumental performance music students (band and orchestra) for school instruments. The need is likely to continue, if not grow year after year. School instruments are provided free of charge to students whose families request them. Thus we ensure equal access to our programs for all students. We would be most grateful for any money that could be raised that would go towards purchasing more instruments for the school, and/or financial aid for student rentals (from Ellis Music, Vermont Violins, for example). A new instrument might cost anywhere between $300-$600, while several used instruments may be bought for that amount. A rental from Ellis Music (for example) costs between $20-$45 a month, depending on the instrument.

FUND OUR PROJECT!

Are you interested in celebrating the incredible diversity we have in our District by exposing students to different foods, music and performances?  This might be where you donate your money...
