School Board update from Liz Curry, Ward 3 school commissioner and former Hunt parent:
Hello Neighbors,

We are winding down another school year but just getting started on another cycle of budget planning! Interim Superintendent Howard Smith is taking comments and questions about budget needs and priorities so that he and the administrative staff can research budget areas over the summer in preparation for proposing a FY17 budget with the new Superintendent, Yaw Obeng. If you have budget comments and questions, please send them along to me or Dr. Smith at hsmith@bsdvt.org.

In April the Board approved a construction contract for renovations at Edmunds Elementary School, including ADA compliance through installation of an elevator and bathroom accessibility; renovation of classroom space on the ground floor; staircase repairs; installation of sprinklers and LED lighting; and computer lab renovation at Edmunds Middle School.

In May the Administration presented the FY15 Annual Equity Report Card, which tracks data annually on student achievement gaps by gender, English Proficiency, income, race, and educational ability. Demographics have changed in the last years and students of color comprise close to 30 % of the student body, there are over 60 languages spoken in the district and, in some schools, poverty rate is over 60%. The Diversity & Equity Office has a goal of adding data by gender orientation and identity, and is researching approaches to maintaining confidentiality for this indicator. You can find the report here:http://district.bsd.schoolfusion.us/modules/cms/pages.phtml?pageid=269778&sessionid=a51c717945becb05b935c61e883c61ed

We are working with a highly experienced law firm to secure visa work papers for Dr. Yaw Obeng, our new superintendent. Dinse, Knapp & McAndrew has completed dozens of work visas for UVM and the UVM Medical Center faculty and staff. We are grateful to Dr. Smith for his willingness to continue on to assure a smooth transition between the two superintendents.
